Sustainable Brewery Certification

WHAT IS THE SBC?
The Sustainable Brewery Certification is a nationally replicable, environmental scoring system for the craft brewing industry offering one-on-one facility level Technical Assistance through NIST's Manufacturing Extension Partnership, webinars, how-to videos, and a pollution prevention self-assessment tool.
WHY GET CERTIFIED?
Getting certified through the MTP2 Sustainable Brewery Certification signals a brewery’s commitment to environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, and community leadership. By implementing pollution prevention strategies—such as reducing water and energy use, managing waste streams, and sourcing materials sustainably—breweries can lower operating costs, streamline production, and reduce regulatory risks. Certification not only strengthens a brewery’s brand with environmentally conscious consumers and tourists, but also sets it apart in a competitive craft beer market. Ultimately, sustainable practices help protect our pristine natural resources while enhancing the brewery’s bottom line and long-term resilience.
WHAT IS THE SELF-ASSESSMENT?
The Brewery Sustainability Self-Assessment tool and scorecard are designed to simplify and eliminate guesswork in the process of collecting, tracking, and auditing day-to-day operations. This custom-built calculator will walk breweries through each step needed to calculate and measure baselines in the areas of energy use, water use, chemical use, brewery waste output, and raw materials sourcing. This baseline will help breweries effectively quantify each step of the brewing operation and identify areas for improvement.
WHAT IS THE MOBILE TOOLKIT?
The Mobile Toolkit consists of a flow meter, multi-meter, mobile timer/stopwatch, mobile scale to weigh raw materials, graduated bucket to measure process waste, and flow meter adapters/concentric reducers. The toolkit and matching guide can be mailed/delivered to breweries upon request.
