Patient's Rights

Patients have a right:

  • To be treated with respect, consideration and dignity.
  • To appropriate privacy.
  • To be informed about the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of their health problem in terms that can be understood.
  • To know any possible risks, side effects and alternative methods of treatment.
  • To receive confidential treatment of their health information. The full Notice of Privacy Practices describes how this information may be used or disclosed.
  • To know who is responsible for providing their treatment.
  • To have access to a second medical opinion before making any decision. Patients can decide not to be treated, but must be informed of the medical consequences of refusal.
  • To participate in decisions involving their health, including the right to select their provider at Student Health Services Medical and Dental Services, to change providers or ask to be referred to a non-MSU health care provider. 
  • To be informed of the personal responsibilities involved in seeking medical treatment and maintaining health and well-being thereafter.
  • To have access to resource persons and information concerning health education, self-care and prevention of illness.
  • To have access to information concerning services available at the organization, provisions for after hours and emergency coverage, fees for services, payment policies, patient conduct and responsibilities.

Patient's Responsibilities

As a consumer of a health services, you have responsibilities as well as rights. We encourage you to speak openly with your healthcare team, take part in your treatment choices, and promote your own safety by being well informed and involved in your care:

  • You are responsible for providing complete and accurate information about your health and medical history, including present condition, past illnesses, hospital stays, medicines, vitamins, herbal products, and any other matters that pertain to your health, including perceived safety risks.
  • You are responsible for asking questions when you do not understand information or instructions. If you believe you cannot follow through with your treatment plan, you are responsible for telling your care team.
  • You are responsible for outcomes if you do not follow the care, treatment, and service plan.
  • You are expected to actively participate in your treatment plan and to keep your care team informed of the effectiveness of your treatment. You are expected to report any adverse side effects of treatment and/or worsening condition.
  • You are expected to treat all clinic staff, other patients, and visitors with courtesy and respect; abide by all university rules and safety regulations.
  • It is your responsibility to keep scheduled appointments. If you are unable to attend, please cancel or reschedule with ample notice so your appointment time may be given to another patient. Failure to provide notification of an appointment cancellation at least one hour in advance will result in the patient incurring a "no-show" fee.
  • You have the responsibility to keep appointments, be on time, and call SHS if you cannot keep your appointments. Failure to provide notification of an appointment cancellation at least one hour in advance will result in the patient incurring a "no-show" fee.
  • You have personalfinancial responsibilityfor charges not covered by the student health fee or other applicable coverage.
