Dr. Steven Swinford

Vice President for Student Success
 
Dr. Steven Swinford earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Bowling Green State University and has been a dedicated member of Montana State University for over 25 years. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Swinford has held positions such as Vice Provost and professor and has taught a variety of courses, including research methods, family violence, culture, social psychology, and social stratification. His research focuses on topics such as couple violence, substance use among emerging adults, and advancements in survey methodologies. Beyond his research and teaching commitments, Dr. Swinford actively participates in initiatives aimed at enhancing programs for student retention, persistence, and graduation at MSU.

Erin Weides

Assistant to the Vice President
for Student Success
 

Erin Weides joined Montana State University in August 2026 as Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Student Success. She supports the Vice President's Office and works closely with departments across the Student Success division, helping advance initiatives that support students throughout their university experience.

Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Erin earned a bachelor's degree in English Writing and Literature from the University of Northwestern and completed graduate studies in Education at Bethel University. Her career has included seven years as a middle and high school English teacher, followed by nearly a decade as an executive assistant, including supporting leaders at a Fortune 50 organization. She values the opportunity to bring together experience from education, corporate business, and higher education in service of students and the university community.

Erin and her family moved to Montana for both professional opportunities and a love of outdoor adventure. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring Montana with her husband and their dog, Nala, discovering new restaurants, taking scenic mountain drives, and attending live music whenever possible.

Meredith Given  

Business Operations Manager 

Meredith Given grew up in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating highschool, she spent a year working in Zaragoza, Spain, where she discovered her passion for travelling and the Spanish language. Following her year abroad, Meredith attended James Madison University, earning a BA in Spanish and International Affairs. She is currently pursuing a M.Ed in International Educational Leadership. Meredith originally came to Montana to ski instruct at Big Sky resort, where she instructed for four winters before joining the VPSS staff in the fall of 2024. Meredith presently serves as the business operations manager offering support to multiple offices, and of course, the MSU students.
