Course Description:

This is the second of four FNP clinical courses. Students continue to apply knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in the required prerequisite FNP courses in the clinical setting. Students provide culturally competent, holistic care to families, and patients throughout the lifespan.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate effective communication and documentation with patients and families in the primary care setting with respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion of team-based interactions.
  2. Implement appropriate key assessment skills in clinical practicee that include differentiation of normal age changes from acute and chronic medical disease process including mood disorders, substance abuse, and culturual health.
  3. Apply clincial judgement skills in the development of a comprehensive evidence-based plan paying close attention to cultural, spiritual, and sexual preferences.
  4. Demonstrates accountability in all professional interactions.
  5. Collaborate with preceptor to manage more complex encounters.

Exemplars of Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will be observed performing a complete patient visit during an on-site clinical visit. The student will build upon foundational competencies and gradually apply more advanced clinical skills as proficiency increases. The student will exhibit effective communication, perform thorough and accurate assessments, apply appropriate clinical judgment, and maintain professional accountability. Performance will be evaluated using the course rubric and may be remediated as needed. (CLO 1-5)
  2. Students will complete a midterm and final self-evaluation of a modified standardized APRN competency tool. Faculty will complete parallel evaluations. (CLO 1-5)
  3. SOAP notes: Students will complete six SOAP notes that show continual improvement in accuracy, clinical reasoning, and thorough documentation of patient encounters. (CLO 1-5)
  4. Intensives: Students will progressively improve their ability to deliver a clinical presentation of a problem-focused visit and will actively engage in increasingly complex group discussions (CLO 1-4)
