Basics in informatics and library search skills will be utilized. Evidence-based practice [EBP] competencies are examined and include discussion of clinical outcomes and rapid critical appraisal of research. Students will develop a scholarly project based on both existing information and student effort while utilizing nursing theory.
Catalog Description:
This course addresses the ethical, professional, and evidence-based practice obligations of professional nursing to foster EBP competencies of rapid critical research appraisal and planning of clinical outcomes. Students will develop a scholarly project utilizing nursing theory.
Course Objectives:

- Interpret application of nursing and other healthcare discipline theories to guide evidence-based practice.
- Apply computer skills to search appropriate databases to review relevant EBP and clinical practice guidelines with inclusion to diverse populations.
- Apply EBP competencies of rapid critical appraisal, basic statistical interpretation, moving from evidence to action (patient concerns, choices and clinical judgement, and cultural considerations to a practice issue)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:
1. Conduct rapid critical appraisal of a research study.
2. Discuss a patient concern or cultural consideration regarding implementation of an evidence- based intervention.
3. Produce a scholarly product based on both existing information and student effort (analysis, synthesis, design, etc).
4. Build upon the collection of reflections including a critical appraisal of evidence, certification in the ethical conduct of research, and the creation of a scholarly evidence-based product that will guide their conduct and future practice as they reflect on their progression of AACN (American Association of Colleges of Nursing) competencies in the BSN program.
