The Office of International Programs (OIP) is excited to offer the International Seed Grants (ISG) to help MSU faculty develop new STEM-related short-term study abroad programs for MSU students.

The grant is intended to support faculty as they explore new destinations, build local partnerships, and develop innovative international learning opportunities. Preference will be given to proposals involving destinations in South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa.

Funding: 

Award Amount: $2,500-$2,900

Funds may be used for:

  • Travel related to program planning (airfare, lodging, transportation, etc.)
  • Supplemental salary support through the department
  • Other reasonable expenses associated with developing a new program

Exceptions:  

  • Equipment 

Expectations:

Recipients must:

  • Complete planning travel within one year of receiving the award
  • Submit a brief report summarizing findings, partnerships, and next steps
  • Submit a draft proposal for the new faculty-led study abroad program

Please notethat receiving an ISG does not guarantee approval of the proposed program. All new programs must still go through the standard Faculty-Led Study Abroad review process.

Timeline:

Application Deadline: Monday, November 16, 2026.

Awards will be announced during the spring semester. Approximately 3-5 grants will be awarded, depending on available funding.

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of OIP staff and faculty representatives. Priority will be given to proposals that:

  • Create high-impact learning opportunities for students
  • Expand MSU's presence in new locations
  • Demonstrate strong planning and potential for success

  1. Proposal Narrative (1-2 pages)
    • What you plan to do and why
    • Your experience with the topic or destination
    • How the program supports MSU students and excellence in teaching and learning
  2. Itemized Budget and Budget Justification
  3. Short CV
  4. Letter of Support from your department head, supervisor, or dean

We encourage applicants to research their proposed destination and include relevant information in their application. Strong proposals demonstrate clear educational value, thoughtful planning, and the potential for a sustainable new study abroad opportunity.
