Who is eligible to enroll in MentorMT?

  • Licensed teachers at rural schools during their first or second year of teaching
  • Licensed teachers outside endorsement in their grade band or subject area
  • Teachers on a provisional license while working toward full licensure
  • Teachers under emergency authorization
  • Teachers in a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa program

What kinds of support does MentorMT provide for mentees?

  • Targeted one-on-one support. New teachers are matched with a mentor of similar grade level and subject area, which enables mentoring to focus on content, curriculum, instruction, and students. Partners who may be several hours apart find easy connection through communication technologies such as Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, phone calls, and email.
  • Multiple layers of support. As a baseline minimum, partners schedule two intentional meetings each month, defined as real-time interactions focused on actionable improvements to teaching and learning. Many partners far exceed this minimum as they exchange books and materials, create shared documents and lessons, and connect more frequently through emails, texts, social media, and other means.
  • Community support. Mentors and mentees also have access to a statewide network of teachers. They share ideas and ask questions through the online MentorMT Home Base (housed on the OPI Teacher Learning Hub) and may receive answers from multiple peers in their discipline. In spring and fall, we host a series of Rendezvous gatherings in rural locations across the state, where mentors and mentees from that region gather for professional learning and networking.
  • Program support. The Home Base serves as a centralized access point for program resources. Partners can order materials for extended book studies related to content, pedagogy, or behavior. Funding is available to support in-person meetings between distant partners and for travel to a Rendezvous. A monthly newsletter broadcasts program updates while regular “Mentors Only” meetings support mentor growth. A team of facilitators known as Metamentors monitor activity and progress and provide individualized mentor support.

Mentees are eligible for a participation stipend of $500 after demonstrating active engagement with their assigned mentor during their first semester in the program. Please note that stipends are dependent on funding levels. The availability of stipends will be confirmed on a year-by-year basis.
