Information and Resources for LGBTQ+ Communities
The initials LGBT are intended to emphasize a diversity of sexuality and gender identity-based cultures. They may be used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexualor non-cisgenderinstead of just to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. To recognize this broader population, the letter Q has been added for those who identify as queeror who are questioningtheir sexual identity. The further inclusion of + is used to incorporate other identities such as intersex, asexual, and ally. See the terminology section of this page for more information on these, and many more, terms.

                           The Rainbow Flag
The rainbow flag, commonly the gay pride flag and sometimes the LGBT pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. The colors
reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol
of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in Northern California, but is
                              now used worldwide.

Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several
revisions to first remove then re-add colors due to widely available fabrics. As of
2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, with the colors red, orange,
                              yellow, green, blue, and violet.
The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it
would be in a natural rainbow.
The meaning of the six original colors are:
red: life
orange: healing
yellow: sunlight
green: nature
blue: serenity/harmony
violet: spirit
In 2018, Portland-based designer Daniel Quasar modified the flag further and added the black and brown stripes to represent the identities of black
and brown people. The pink, blue and white stripes are taken from the
Transgender Pride Flag.

Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories
to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and

gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where

Sunshine Behavioral Health - How Addiction Affects the Transgender Community
Substanceabuse for transgender men and women is up to 4-10 times higher than their cisgender
counterparts. This is especially unfortunate since, now, 40% of transgender youth
report being depressed most if not all the time. This combination of issues creates
a severe danger for these youths. This comprehensive guide discusses how addiction
affects the trans community, its dangers, and how to find proper programs for them
to get the help they need.

Popular culture images of LGBT people suggest that most LGBT people live in cities
or on the coasts. Yet an estimated three million or more LGBT people call rural America
home.  The Movement Advancement Project released a new report, Where We Call Home: LGBT People in Rural America, which examines the structural differences in rural life and their unique impact on
LGBT people in rural areas, who are both more vulnerable to discrimination and less
able to respond to its harmful effects.

to get married. Yet, many basic rights are still denied to the same LGBT Americans

play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly

gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where
